Essential Access Health

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Mahalo @essnaccesshlth for the kind words! We see you!

Essential Access Health’s wonderful post:

“We share Ko'olauloa's belief that health care is a right, not a privilege. We were inspired to hear how #TitleX funding supports their capacity to ensure that patients living in this rural region receive the contraceptive method that is right for them, supporting their individual and ohana health, and the piece of mind that access to essential health care brings. Mahalo to the amazing team at Ko'olauloa, you are super stars in your community!”

KHC Site Visit

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Earlier this month, Ko'olauloa Health Center had the honor of hosting visitors from the Hawai'i Primary Care Association (HPCA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD).

They spent the afternoon talking story about the health center's participation in the National Diabetes Prevention Program. This program aims to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by following the CDC-recognized lifestyle change program.

Ko'olauloa community members meet regularly over the course of the one-year program. Together the cohort works towards making lasting lifestyle changes, such as adding physical activity into their daily routine and making modifications to the foods they eat.

Mahalo Naty!

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Ko’olauloa Health Center is announcing the retirement of Nativad “Naty” Camit Hopewell, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and provider of this community.

Originally born in the Philippines and raised in Kahuku, Oahu, Naty has been serving the Ko’olauloa community since 2002. She began her career at Ko’olauloa Health Center in November 2004 as an advocate for the initial funding to start the health center itself. Her husband, Mike Hopewell, and herself volunteered as the CFO and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to help get the health center off its feet. In addition to being a medical provider at Ko’olauloa Health Center, Naty also held other positions including, but not limited to, Outreach Supervisor, Quality Improvement Officer, and Medical Director. She could do anything from helping you find the help that you needed to providing and getting the care that her patients deserved. Naty was very passionate and cared for the well-being of her patients whether they were her own patients or someone that just walked in and needed care.

When she’s not serving her community as a medical provider, Naty likes to tend to her garden, is a member of her church choir, and a ukulele student. She also belongs to the Bromeliad Society, is a trained artist, and is an author of multiple health-related articles.

She will be truly missed here at Ko’olauloa Health Center. We wish her the best in retirement and hope that she continues to travel and see the world as the avid, worldly traveler that she is.
P.S. Don’t worry, we still have other providers to see you!

Reach Out & Read

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Reposting this from a few weeks ago so that yesterday's post made sense.

Did you know reading to children supports health and wellness?

Even though babies can’t understand everything you’re saying let alone read words, reading aloud is key to brain development needed for math, reading, and even emotional control. Because it’s social time, it’s a time for you to get closer to your baby.

Try to read out loud to your baby every day; before naps and bedtime are ideal. Have them snuggle in your lap when you’re reading to them. Read with enthusiasm. Vary the tone of your voice. You’re not limited to the words on the page. Ask questions. What’s going to happen next? Etc.

At Ko’olauloa Health Center we believe reading is so vital for wellness, we have a program called Reach Out and Read. Each time your child comes for their visit between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, will receive a new book to add to their personal library. Speaking of libraries. If you don’t have a public library card, go get one! Picking out books with your child will build a lifetime of love for reading.

Concerned about your child’s reading or speaking? Let your primary care provider know. We can usually tell you if they’re on track or not, and if we have any doubts, we can refer your child to the right specialist to figure out the issue and get the needed treatment.

Keiki and adults alike need to stay on schedule for regular wellness visits. Call us today for an appointment. We are always accepting new patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

visit www.koolauloachc.org or call (808) 293-9231 for more information.
